What to Expect with a Posed Portrait Newborn Session - Studio Light

If I am traveling to you, It will feel like I'm moving in! It usually takes me a good 5-10 minutes to unload. I will take a look around and quickly show you a few outfits and some wraps. I will need a large space about (8x10 if possible but 8x6 is usually the minimum) that is pretty warm, quiet and closed off from noise, pets and other children when possible. I will bring a space heater during colder months. If baby is awake when I arrive, I recommend trying for one more feeding while I set up. This gives us a chance to quickly discuss color and outfit options get them dressed and let them fall asleep right after feeding.  While you are feeding is usually a good time for me to set up my stand, bean bag poser and baskets and lighting for the shoot. Usually takes about 15-20 minutes for me to set up my props and equipment. With all that prep, we can aim to start shooting about 30 min after arrival. I usually start with some photos with the baby wrapped up with family shots and slowly remove items and add accessories as we go through the poses and set ups. Typically my clients feed at the beginning, which allows a good 1-2 hrs of solid shooting time. Sometimes we get lucky and can do 2.5-3 straight through! If they wake during the session, we take a 20-30 min break for a feed, while I set up another round of props. We will finish everything we need for the next 30-45 min. If baby is still asleep, I will stay and take a few more till your 3 hour max is reached. Then I will quietly clean up and head on my way.

If you are traveling to me, I will have everything set up for you when you arrive. You will be given time to get settled and feed if needed. Please remember to bring enough diapers and any milk your child may need during the session. Sessions can go a little longer if babies are fussy so it’s best to plan for a little extra just in case! Feel free to bring snacks for meals for yourself as well. You will have plenty of time to relax, read, eat or sleep.

If the timing doesn’t work out like that it is ok! If by chance he is sound asleep or just up from a nap when I arrive, we simply change of the order of things a bit and everything will eventually get finished at the same time.

Themes/Colors

You will be sent a questionnaire to help me understand your preferences for colors, props, outfits and accessories. If you do not know the gender this will be sent after the arrival of your child. If you have any ideas that might be more elaborate feel free to share as soon as possible so I can be prepared for you. Usually 5-7 days is enough time after the arrival for me to custom sew something for you or prepare a special prop. No need to worry too much if you do not know the gender. Of course you do not need a theme, you can always just choose a few colors and keep it simple and focus on the baby!

Tips

Here are a few tips that will help the session go a little more smoothly.

There are no requirements for preparing for your session. This includes cleaning- Please do NOT need to clean your home for my visit. :) I have been in your shoes and understand the labor of love involved in taking care of a newborn. Please save yourself the trouble.

If I am coming to your home in the winter, please bump up the temperature a few degrees at least 1 hour prior to arrival. If you have a space heater on hand, you can also warm the brightest room available with a closing door. I will bring a space heater, so don’t worry if one is not available. Baby may have all or some clothes removed during parts of the session so we need it at least 80 degrees in the area we will be shooting. It will be HOT to keep baby happy so be prepared to remove some layers on yourself! In the summer, you can turn off the AC or just close the vent shortly before or after arrival.

A quick sponge bath to baby’s face, hands and feet is very helpful on the day of your session. Don’t stress if it doesn’t happen. If you have your own special outfit you may choose to have them ready in that outfit. If you will be using my outfits and accessories, please remove everything but the diaper and swaddle them up to keep warm till my arrival. If you are traveling to me try to dress them in something easy that snaps up if possible so we can try not to disturb them.

If you’d like to take photos with your baby, I recommend wearing neutral colors with no patterns or stripes. White ivory and tan are always very classic styles. Black can be worn if you are specifically looking to create a moody and dramatic scene. See samples in my galleries for reference. I usually recommend you avoid wearing bright vivid colors in newborn sessions as they can detract from your face and cause reflection off your clothing and onto the baby’s skin. Clothing with writing on it is also best left for another day. We want your images to be timeless, so pick something simple that you can look back on in 20 years and love. If you are concerned about spit up prior to the shoot, you can change just before we take those photos. Don’t worry too much, there is always editing!

If siblings will be joining in for photos, I usually recommend involving them in the first 30 minutes or the last depending on works best with your schedule. Since we want to keep baby relaxed and asleep, it’s required to let older children play in another area for the remainder of the session.

The length of the session depends on the baby. Anywhere from 2-3 hours is average to allow for feeding when necessary. If you have a very sleepy and relaxed baby things will run a little smoother. One way to encourage a sleepier baby is to have a little awake time just prior to your session. A sponge bath is always a good trick!

The last thing is to just relax! Baby will pick up on your mood so the more relaxed and happy you are the better. This is meant to be a relaxing and pleasant experience for all family members. If there is anything I can do to create a better environment for you please don’t hesitate to ask!

Please call, text or email with any questions. If you would like to change the location of your session please kindly give me 24 hours. Thank you!

Lifestyle Newborn Session Tips - Natural light when possible

There are no requirements for preparing for your session! This includes cleaning- Please do NOT need to clean your home for my visit. :) I have been in your shoes and understand the labor of love involved in taking care of a newborn. Please save yourself the trouble. You may want to clear away laundry or other things from the main area we may be shooting: your living room couch, the master bed, the newborns cradle or crib.

If it is winter, please bump up the temperature a few degrees at least 1 hour prior to arrival. Baby may have all or some clothes removed during parts of the session so we want to keep it very warm in the area we will be shooting when undressed. In the summer you may want to turn the AC off for a bit to raise the temperature temporarily.

I recommend changing and feeding the baby just before I arrive, or shortly after if it matches with the child’s needs. This gives us a chance to quickly discuss your session and jump right in to capturing those special moments. If you have your own outfit you may choose to have your child ready in that outfit when I arrive or in just a diaper if you would like some bare skin photos. Please pick which option that is the highest priority and we will start with those photos. If you chose bare skin photos as the highest priority, please remove everything but the diaper and feel free to swaddle or wrap to keep warm till my arrival. When I arrive, I will evaluate the best place for lighting and keeping baby comfortable. This may include several different rooms and environments for “Lifestyle Sessions” to document your life as you live it those first few weeks.

I usually recommend wearing neutral colors with no patterns or stripes. Black can be worn if you are specifically looking to create a moody and dramatic scene. See samples in my galleries for reference. I usually avoid wearing bright vivid colors as they can detract from your face and cause reflection off your clothing and onto the baby’s skin. Clothing with writing on it is best left for another day. We want your images to be timeless, so pick something simple that you can look back on in 20 years and love.

The length of the session depends on the baby and your requests. 1.25 is the maximum allowed time for this session. If you have a very sleepy baby things will usually run a little smoother. One way to encourage a sleepier baby is to have a little awake time just prior to your session. A sponge bath is always a good trick!

The last thing is to just relax! Baby will pick up on your mood so the more relaxed and happy you are the better.
